Chicago police officers were involved in a shooting incident in the Chatham neighborhood on Friday night, where a man shot a woman before opening fire on responding officers. The suspect, a six-time convicted felon who was on parole since September, was shot multiple times by police after he allegedly fired at them during a foot chase.

The incident unfolded when officers received a 911 call reporting an intoxicated man with two knives slashing tires in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue. As they were en route, they received an update that the armed man had fired shots at a woman and flattened her tires. Upon arrival, officers engaged the suspect in a pursuit in the alley, leading to gunfire exchange.

The 28-year-old suspect, who has a history of felony convictions including bribery and aggravated battery, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old woman was found inside an apartment with gunshot wounds to her arm. She was also taken to the same hospital but was in good condition.

Two officers involved in the incident were taken to hospitals for observation but were not seriously injured. Following department policy, all officers will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days. Chicago police issued a statement detailing the sequence of events and confirming the recovery of a firearm at the scene.

This incident highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face in responding to domestic disturbances and the importance of their training and quick decision-making in such high-pressure situations. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and the officers involved will cooperate with the Investigative Response Team.
