In light of our recent coverage, it should come as no surprise that a faction of Senate Democrats is contemplating a compromise that could undermine both national interests and democratic principles. They are considering breaking their own party’s filibuster rules to facilitate the passage of a government funding resolution backed by Senate Republicans and former President Trump.
CNN’s Manu Raju reported on X:
After an extensive closed-door lunch meeting, several Senate Democrats have indicated that they anticipate enough support within their ranks to break a Democratic filibuster, thereby allowing the House Republican stop-gap funding plan to become law. The situation remains fluid, and the final outcome is still uncertain. However, there is a growing consensus that at least eight Democrats might vote to break the filibuster, with a vote scheduled for tomorrow.
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has urged his colleaguesnot to abandon the filibuster, arguing that the continuing resolution would enhance Trump’s power and could be more damaging than a government shutdown.
Booker articulated his concerns to Raju, stating, “This approach signals a willingness to surrender even more of our constitutional authority, essentially saying that we should capitulate because he might do worse things later. We find ourselves in a bizarre situation where the choice is between letting Donald Trump dismantle the government through this method or that one.”
In this instance, Booker’s perspective is astute.
The actions of these Democrats cannot be characterized as “winning.” Instead, they risk sacrificing their country and party in what they believe is a strategic move for self-preservation.
