Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard Pay Tribute to Sinéad O’Connor on “SNL50: The Anniversary Special”

Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard took the stage during the “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” on Sunday night to honor the legendary Sinéad O’Connor. The duo performed a heartfelt rendition of the iconic Prince song, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which O’Connor famously covered in 1990 for her album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.”

O’Connor made headlines in 1992 with her controversial appearance on “Saturday Night Live” where she performed a cover of Bob Marley’s “War” and tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. The act was a statement against the sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, which garnered both praise and criticism.

The aftermath of O’Connor’s SNL appearance led to her being banned from the show, mocked in sketches, and criticized by host Joe Pesci. Despite the backlash, O’Connor stood by her actions and believed it was a pivotal moment in her career that put her back on the right path.

In her memoir “Rememberings” released in 2021, O’Connor reflected on the incident, stating that she was well aware of the potential repercussions but felt it was necessary to speak out. She acknowledged the divide in reactions between Europe and America but held no resentment towards those who criticized her.

Tragically, Sinéad O’Connor passed away in 2023 at the age of 56, leaving behind a legacy as a fearless and outspoken artist. Her impact on music and activism continues to resonate with fans around the world.
