Criminal Minds actress Kirsten Vangsness has commented on the “discomfort” some fans have expressed regarding the show’s 19th season.
In a conversation with Us Weekly, Vangsness, 54, shared her thoughts on the plot twist involving her character, Garcia, who was revealed to have surreptitiously supported the infamous serial killer Elias Voit, played by Zach Gilford.
Addressing the mixed reactions, she explained, “It’s vital for the narrative this season. The show aims to make viewers confront discomfort, much like we do when wronged by someone in real life.”
Vangsness emphasized relatability, saying, “It’s about acknowledging the current state of individuals and remembering that everyone was once innocent. This person who lacked empathy and compassion now has the chance to experience it.”
She further elaborated, “Are we going to keep dwelling on past actions? He’s in prison and doesn’t get to enjoy freedom. This scenario raises intriguing questions, which is the essence of that relationship. While Garcia might not typically visit prisons on weekends, anything is possible.”
Vangsness was initially unaware that the relationship between Garcia and Voit would be explored in depth in the latest episodes.
“I realized it during the table read, which is typical for me,” she said. “Garcia’s efforts to avoid a death penalty align perfectly with her character. Personally, I believe everyone should strive to release their own guilt and confront the urge to punish others.”
She valued Garcia’s character growth, stating, “Garcia is spiritually ahead of me in many ways. Her understanding of the justice system is deep, and she aims to contribute positively without adding to the problem.”
Looking forward, Vangsness is eager to see how her storyline unfolds.
“Garcia has been given significant screen time, and I’m pleased with it,” she shared with Us. “I had a busy schedule filming this season, especially in its concluding episodes.”
Vangsness also hinted at a new storyline for Garcia in season 20. “There’s a topic affecting everyone right now being addressed in an intriguing way,” she mentioned. “It presents a rare opportunity for Garcia, one that I often encounter in my own life.”
She concluded, “This season is outstanding. I believe fans appreciate the variety in each episode, and there will be more of that, which is fantastic.”
Criminal Minds: Evolution is available on Paramount+, airing Thursdays.
