The Indiana Fever are facing a tough challenge as they gear up to take on the Washington Mystics without their star point guard Caitlin Clark. Adding to their woes, guard Sophie Cunningham, who is on a one-year contract worth $100,000, has also been ruled out of the upcoming matchup.
Clark is currently recovering from a quad injury and is set to undergo a re-evaluation on June 9. The initial prognosis estimated her absence for at least two weeks, but there is no definite timeline for her return as it will depend on the assessment results.
In the absence of Clark, head coach Stephanie White provided some positive news regarding Cunningham’s injury. The MRI results showed that the injury was not as severe as initially feared. However, White did not specify a clear timeline for Cunningham’s return to the court.
“I think we got good news from both (Cunningham and Sydney Colson) of their MRIs, as good of news as you can get,” White said. “And so right now, it’s a day-to-day thing. We’re looking forward to hopefully them returning at some point sooner rather than later, but at the same time, it’s how each of them progresses in their rehab.”
Cunningham suffered a right ankle injury during the Fever’s close 85-83 loss to the Connecticut Sun, requiring assistance to the locker room in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, Sydney Colson also sustained a left leg injury in the same game but has been cleared to play and is expected to be in action against the Mystics.
The Indiana Fever will host the Washington Mystics at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Tuesday, June 3, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. EST (4 p.m. PT). Fans can catch the game live on MeTV, NBA TV, WNBA League Pass, and the Fubo TV app and website (subject to regional restrictions).
This challenging period for the Fever will test their depth and resilience as they look to overcome the absence of key players. The team will need to rally together and step up in the absence of Clark and Cunningham to secure a positive result against the Mystics.
