Crunchyroll, a leading global anime brand and streaming service with over 17 million subscribers, continues to solidify its position as a major player in the entertainment industry. With the largest dedicated anime library on its platform, Crunchyroll is actively engaging new audiences through a variety of immersive experiences, including events, theatrical releases, games, merchandise, news, and more.
As Anime Expo in L.A. and Japan Expo in Paris approach, Crunchyroll’s presence at Annecy is impossible to miss. From showcasing “Demon Slayer” garments to presenting Crunchyroll anime at the festival, the company is highlighting its global hits and new strategies to professionals, students, and animation enthusiasts.
During the Annecy Crunchyroll Studio Focus 2025 presentation, Crunchyroll’s EVP of global commerce and head of theatrical, Michel Berger, emphasized the significant growth of anime and how Crunchyroll has contributed to this growth. Berger noted that anime is no longer a niche market and has evolved into a storytelling medium that resonates with fans worldwide through dynamic characters, stunning visuals, and emotional connections.
According to Berger, anime fandom is projected to reach 1.5 billion by 2030, excluding Japan and China, based on data from a recent Crunchyroll study conducted by the National Research Group (NRG). The study highlighted anime’s increasing cultural impact and emotional significance for younger audiences, with Gen Z ranking anime alongside music and sports icons.
The study also revealed that social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube play a significant role in anime discovery and engagement, with fans actively discussing and sharing their love for anime online. Berger emphasized that anime is not just a form of entertainment but a deeply felt experience for its audience.
Crunchyroll’s commitment to expanding its offerings beyond streaming content is evident in its focus on games, music, collectibles, immersive events, and theatrical releases. Berger highlighted the success of “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which became the highest-grossing Japanese anime movie of all time, grossing over $500 million globally.
In partnership with Sony Pictures International, Crunchyroll recently acquired international theatrical rights for the compilation film “Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory (Premature Death – The Movie),” expanding the cinematic experience for fans worldwide. The company is also set to release “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle” in international markets through Sony Pictures Releasing.
With Crunchyroll’s growing presence in the entertainment industry, including recognition at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards and representation at Annecy, the company is poised to continue its success and offer fans a diverse range of anime experiences. As anime’s popularity continues to rise, Crunchyroll remains at the forefront of delivering unique and engaging content to a global audience.
