A 36-year-old man named Jack Gray has been accused of beating and robbing a Red Line passenger with a metal meat tenderizer. Prosecutors revealed that Gray assaulted the commuter while already on pretrial release for two other cases.

The incident took place around 7:20 a.m. on September 19 as a 31-year-old man from Edgewater was riding the train to work. Gray reportedly approached the victim near the 69th Street station, demanded his belongings, and threatened him with the metal tenderizer. He then proceeded to beat the man in the face and body with the mallet, punched him, and kneed him multiple times, causing damage to the victim’s eyeglasses. Gray then took the victim’s bag, which contained schoolwork, an iPhone, and AirPods. Additionally, he displayed a large knife before exiting the train.

Following the attack, Chicago police released a community alert with a surveillance image of the suspect. Gray was later identified and arrested. During his detention hearing, Judge John Hock ordered Gray to be held in jail pending trial, noting that he was already on pretrial release for two retail theft cases at the time of the Red Line incident.
