The Los Angeles Chargers, led by head coach Jim Harbaugh, faced a tough season due to injuries to key players like Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater. Despite these setbacks, the team managed to finish the regular season with an impressive 11-6 record and secured a spot in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, their Super Bowl aspirations were dashed after a disappointing 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots. Quarterback Justin Herbert, who had signed a lucrative five-year deal with the team in 2023, faced immense pressure from the Patriots’ defense as he was sacked six times and failed to throw a single touchdown pass.

Following the defeat, sports writer Dan Le Batard criticized Jim Harbaugh for putting Herbert in a vulnerable position by not providing him with a strong offensive line for protection. Le Batard went as far as to suggest that Harbaugh should be held accountable for endangering Herbert’s well-being on the field.

The Chargers’ offensive line woes can be attributed to the absence of Joe Alt, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in November 2025, and Rashawn Slater, who was sidelined for the entire season due to a torn patellar tendon. These injuries severely impacted the team’s ability to protect Herbert and establish a consistent offensive rhythm.

In light of the playoff loss, questions have been raised about Justin Herbert’s development under Jim Harbaugh’s tutelage. Despite high expectations for the quarterback-coach duo, their postseason performances have fallen short of expectations, with Herbert struggling in key playoff games.

Renowned sports commentator Jim Rome criticized Harbaugh for failing to maximize Herbert’s potential and elevate the team’s offensive performance. Rome highlighted the disparity between the Chargers’ defensive success and offensive struggles under Harbaugh’s leadership, suggesting that the team has yet to reach its full potential.

As the Chargers reflect on their playoff defeat and assess their future prospects, the focus will undoubtedly be on addressing the offensive line issues and optimizing Justin Herbert’s talents under Jim Harbaugh’s guidance. The team’s success in the upcoming seasons will hinge on their ability to rectify these shortcomings and propel themselves towards championship contention.
