A Woman Sentenced to Six Years in Prison for Involvement in Dan Ryan Expressway Carjacking
A woman who played a role in a daring carjacking on the Dan Ryan Expressway has been sentenced to six years in prison. Starreese Vickers, 23, from Calumet City, pleaded guilty to vehicular hijacking and received the sentence from Judge Paul Pavlus, with the possibility of parole in November due to Illinois law allowing for sentence reductions and time served on electronic monitoring.
The incident, which took place in broad daylight on October 14, 2022, gained widespread attention after a video captured the unfolding events on the expressway. The footage showed a gunman, later identified as Vahsean Davenport, attempting to carjack a driver on the busy roadway.
The video, recorded by a motorist who had stopped to observe the scene, showed the armed man approaching passing vehicles in an apparent attempt to force someone to give him a ride. Despite offering money initially, the gunman eventually resorted to carjacking a red Dodge Journey, with Vickers jumping into the passenger seat before the stolen vehicle sped away.
While no charges were immediately filed following the incident, nearly a year later, an indictment was secured against Davenport for his involvement in the carjacking. However, Davenport evaded court appearances and was eventually apprehended after a police pursuit that ended in a crash on Halloween morning in 2023.
Prosecutors outlined additional charges against Davenport, including attempting to disarm a peace officer and possessing a controlled substance, stemming from previous incidents involving stolen vehicles and a confrontation with law enforcement.
Davenport continues to contest the allegations in court as legal proceedings unfold. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by carjackings and the importance of swift justice in addressing such crimes.
