A man who committed a heinous crime more than 30 years ago has finally been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the rape, stabbing, and murder of a 19-year-old Indianapolis woman. Dana Shepherd, 53, was convicted after signing a plea deal last month, confessing to the killing of Carmen Van Huss, bringing closure to a cold case that had remained unsolved for decades.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed gratitude for securing a murder conviction in a statement, acknowledging the pain and suffering the Van Huss family endured over the years. The resolution of this case, after more than three decades, is hoped to bring some measure of justice and peace to the loved ones of Carmen.

In 1993, Carmen Van Huss was brutally murdered at the age of 19, raped, and stabbed 61 times by an intruder in her apartment. Her body was discovered by her father in a pool of blood, with signs of a struggle evident in the overturned furniture and scattered belongings.

After more than 30 years, Missouri police arrested Shepherd and brought him to Indianapolis to face charges of murder and rape with deadly force. DNA testing played a crucial role in connecting Shepherd to the crime, despite not being a suspect in the initial investigation.

Shepherd, who was 20 at the time of the murder, had a history of criminal activities in Indiana, including charges of battery and public intoxication. Following the murder in 1993, he faced additional charges in Missouri for theft, disturbing the peace, and driving without a license.

The Van Huss family expressed mixed emotions regarding the plea deal and sentencing, acknowledging that while it may not have been their preferred outcome, they are relieved that the perpetrator has finally been held accountable for Carmen’s brutal death. They lamented the fact that he was able to live freely for so many years while Carmen’s life was violently taken away. Despite the irreversible loss and injustice, they find solace in the truth coming to light and justice being served at last.
