Former child star Danielle Spencer has tragically passed away at the age of 60 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. The news was shared by her friend and former costar from the show What’s Happening!!, Haywood Nelson, in a heartfelt Instagram post on August 12.
Nelson paid tribute to Spencer, referring to her as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior” who had finally found peace after her long struggle with cancer. He described her as a daughter, sister, family member, cast member of What’s Happening!!, veterinarian, animal rights advocate, healer, and cancer survivor. Spencer’s contributions to the world were celebrated as Nelson expressed the deep loss felt by her departure.
The actress, known for her role as Dee Thomas on the popular ABC sitcom, What’s Happening!!, had also reprised her role in the sequel series What’s Happening Now!! from 1985 to 1988. Spencer chronicled her experiences as a child star in her memoir, Through the Fire … Journal of a Child Star, published in 2010.
In 2014, Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer, adding to the health challenges she had faced over the years. Despite her optimism and faith, she was shocked by the news, especially considering her history with spinal stenosis following a car accident in 1977. Spencer had been paralyzed briefly after undergoing surgery for her injuries.
The actress spoke candidly about her diagnosis, expressing gratitude for the support she received from loved ones.
