Former child star Danielle Spencer has tragically passed away at the age of 60 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. The news was shared by her friend and former costar from the show What’s Happening!!, Haywood Nelson, in a heartfelt Instagram post on August 12.

Nelson paid tribute to Spencer, referring to her as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior” who had finally found peace after her long struggle with cancer. He described her as a daughter, sister, family member, cast member of What’s Happening!!, veterinarian, animal rights advocate, healer, and cancer survivor. Spencer’s contributions to the world were celebrated as Nelson expressed the deep loss felt by her departure.

The actress, known for her role as Dee Thomas on the popular ABC sitcom, What’s Happening!!, had also reprised her role in the sequel series What’s Happening Now!! from 1985 to 1988. Spencer chronicled her experiences as a child star in her memoir, Through the Fire … Journal of a Child Star, published in 2010.

In 2014, Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer, adding to the health challenges she had faced over the years. Despite her optimism and faith, she was shocked by the news, especially considering her history with spinal stenosis following a car accident in 1977. Spencer had been paralyzed briefly after undergoing surgery for her injuries.

The actress spoke candidly about her diagnosis, expressing gratitude for the support she received from loved ones. She sought multiple medical opinions and hoped to avoid chemotherapy or radiation therapy in her treatment plan. Spencer remained determined and positive in the face of her illness, showcasing her strength and resilience.

Before her passing, Spencer had made her last acting appearance in a 2001 episode of Days of Our Lives. She had been married to marketing manager Garry Fields from 1999 until 2013, and later tied the knot with entrepreneur David L. David in 2014.

Danielle Spencer leaves behind a legacy of talent, strength, and grace that will be remembered by fans and loved ones alike. Her impact on the entertainment industry and her advocacy for animal rights will continue to inspire others for years to come.
