A Virginia man has confessed to planting pipe bombs at the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican National Committees on the eve of the Capitol riot in 2021. Brian Cole Jr., 30, will appear in DC federal court to face charges of transporting explosives across state lines with intent to kill, injure, and cause damage. Cole was arrested after an exhaustive re-examination of the case led by FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

The viable explosives were placed outside the political party headquarters on January 5, 2021, but were not discovered until 17 hours later, just before supporters of President Trump breached the Capitol building. This led to a delay in the certification of the 2020 election results. The arrest of Cole came after the FBI re-examined the case from the ground up and built an evidentiary trail to bring him into custody.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the investigation into Cole did not rely on any new outside tips, but was a result of the team’s dedicated efforts to revisit the case and gather the necessary evidence. The arrest of Cole marks the end of a five-year-long search for the suspect who had eluded police until now.

The FBI released images of the pipe bomb suspect, highlighting the importance of diligent investigative work in solving such cases. The confession of Cole and his upcoming arraignment in court signal a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the pipe bomb incidents in Washington, DC.
