After just one season, “Dead Boy Detectives” has been officially canceled by Netflix. The series made its debut on April 25, but unfortunately, it will not be returning for another season.
The show had a tumultuous journey to the small screen, starting with a pilot order at Max in 2021 and eventually being picked up for a full series at the same streamer in 2022. However, the series was then sold to Netflix in 2023, reportedly due to not aligning with the new direction of Max-DC content led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“Dead Boy Detectives” was part of the “Sandman” universe on Netflix, with the titular characters originating from a comic book issue of “The Sandman.” The show starred George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as the two dead boys who form a friendship in the afterlife and work together to solve supernatural mysteries. The ensemble cast also included Kassius Nelson, Yuyu Kitamura, Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, David Iacono, Lukas Gage, and Ruth Connell.
The series was developed for television by Steve Yockey, who also served as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Beth Schwartz. Other executive producers included Greg Berlanti, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Neil Gaiman. The first episode was directed and executive produced by Lee Toland Krieger, with Berlanti Productions producing in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Despite its cancellation, “Dead Boy Detectives” garnered positive reviews from critics, earning an impressive 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show also performed relatively well on Netflix, remaining in the Top 10 English TV charts for three weeks after its release. However, viewership numbers fluctuated, with the series starting strong at 3.1 million views in its first three days but dropping to just 1.8 million by week three.
While fans may be disappointed by the cancellation of “Dead Boy Detectives,” they can still enjoy the “Sandman” TV series on Netflix, with a second season already in the works.
