Dearborn’s Arab Americans feel vindicated by Harris’ loss

Arab American leaders in Dearborn, Michigan had been warning Vice President Kamala Harris for months about the need to distance herself from President Joe Biden’s support of Israel during the conflict in Gaza. They feared an electoral backlash from this influential community, but their warnings were largely ignored. Instead, Harris made strategic mistakes that deeply offended Arab American voters who were grieving as the death toll in the Middle East continued to rise.

Despite the pleas from the community, Harris refused to have a Palestinian American speaker at the Democratic National Convention and dismissed protesters who criticized her solidarity with Biden over the conflict. She even sent pro-Israel surrogates to Michigan, further exacerbating tensions with the Arab American residents in Dearborn. As a result, many in the community felt vindicated when the election results showed a significant drop in support for Harris.

The initial days after the election saw Arab Americans in Dearborn feeling unsurprised by President-elect Donald Trump’s victory. The community’s protest vote extended beyond Arab Americans to progressives of all ages, leading to a notable anti-war sentiment that had not been seen in a generation. Trump’s social conservatism and isolationist foreign policy resonated with Arabs who had historically been part of the Democratic base but felt abandoned by the Biden administration.

While Trump’s victory in Dearborn was significant, Arab American leaders emphasized that it was a rejection of Biden and Harris rather than a permanent realignment with the Republican party. Democrats still won at every other level of the ballot in Dearborn, showing that the community’s anger was specifically directed at the top of the ticket.

Harris’ handling of the conflict in Gaza and her failure to engage with the Arab American community in a meaningful way created an opening for Trump to capitalize on the community’s discontent. Trump’s anti-Harris messaging and personal visit to Dearborn days before the election resonated with Arab American voters who felt ignored by the Democratic nominee.

Despite the divisions within the Arab American community on how to express their political grievances, Trump’s promises and rhetoric managed to sway some voters who had reservations about Harris. In the end, Trump’s messaging about being on the side of the community and his economic promises were enough to secure a significant portion of the Arab American vote in Dearborn.

The election results in Dearborn reflect a community that felt betrayed and marginalized by the Democratic ticket, leading to a surprising shift in support towards Trump. Harris’ mishandling of the conflict in Gaza and her lack of engagement with the Arab American community ultimately cost her the support of a key demographic in this battleground city.
