Defence lacking for Nuggets in loss

Don’t make the mistake of leaving your opponent stranded in the corner.

The Tauranga Whai dominated the Otago Nuggets, securing a comfortable 97-82 victory in Rotorua. The Nuggets will look to bounce back as they face the Hawke’s Bay Hawks in Napier, but they have some glaring issues to address, particularly their weak perimeter defence.

Kruz Perrott-Hunt and Chris Jones led the charge for the Whai, both scoring 25 points. Carter Hopoi and Xanda Marsters also made significant contributions with 16 points each. Jose Perez put up a strong performance for the Nuggets, recording a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Don Carey jun found his rhythm after a slow start, finishing with 23 points.

Todd Withers stood out on defence for the Nuggets with 18 points and 8 rebounds, but he lacked support from his teammates. Perez and Carey tried to keep their team in the game, but the Whai’s sharpshooting from beyond the arc proved to be too much to handle.

The Whai took advantage of early foul trouble for the Nuggets, building a lead with their three-point shooting. Despite a brief comeback from Otago, the Whai’s consistent scoring and solid defence extended their lead further.

As the game progressed, the Nuggets struggled to close the gap, falling behind due to their slow transition defence and poor shooting. The Whai’s relentless offensive pressure forced turnovers and extended their lead, ultimately sealing the victory.

Otago’s efforts to mount a comeback fell short, with the Whai maintaining their lead and securing a convincing win. Corey Webster’s standout performance for the ManawatÅ« Jets also contributed to an exciting night of basketball in the Rapid League.

Final Scores:

Tauranga Whai 97 (Kruz Perrott-Hunt 25, Chris Jones 25), Otago Nuggets 82 (Jose Perez 26, Don Carey jun 23). Quarter scores: 21-20, 55-48, 77-65.
