A disruptive Delta Airlines passenger, Mario Nikprelaj, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to interfering with flight crew members during a SkyWest flight from Nebraska to Detroit last July. Nikprelaj, a 24-year-old native of Shelby Township, Michigan, was also ordered to serve a two-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence.

According to prosecutors, Nikprelaj caused trouble on Delta Connection Flight 3612 before takeoff from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield. He made disruptive statements, refused to fasten his seatbelt, and stood up repeatedly during the ascent. Despite being instructed to buckle up, Nikprelaj continued to remove his seatbelt and even flipped off an 80-year-old flight attendant, poked her in the chest, and threatened to kill her.

During the flight, passengers alerted the crew when they saw Nikprelaj tampering with the emergency exit door. The situation escalated as Nikprelaj pushed, cursed at, and threatened the flight attendant who tried to intervene. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Nikprelaj was taken into custody.

Upon landing, Nikprelaj was found in possession of a prescription bottle containing 41 pills of Xanax that were not prescribed to him. He faced charges of disorderly conduct, assault, possession of prescription medication, a tax stamp violation, and first-degree harassment.

Nikprelaj’s criminal history includes previous convictions for assaulting a police officer, domestic violence, and drug-related offenses. In 2020, he was charged with hitting his girlfriend and stealing a snowplow from a business near Detroit.

The unruly behavior of Mario Nikprelaj on the SkyWest flight not only endangered fellow passengers and crew members but also led to a disruptive and chaotic midair incident that ultimately resulted in his sentencing to prison.
