'Democracy is worth fighting for': Obama rallies California redistricting supporters

SACRAMENTO, California — A Call to Action from the Former President

In a strategic move as the November 4 special election approaches, Barack Obama has joined forces with Governor Gavin Newsom to galvanize supporters for California Democrats’ congressional redistricting initiative. This endeavor, known as Proposition 50, aims to redraw California’s congressional lines mid-cycle with the objective of securing five additional Democratic seats in the House next year.

The Stakes of Democracy

During a Wednesday call with campaign volunteers, Obama underscored the essential principle at the heart of Proposition 50: the integrity of democracy itself. “There’s a broader principle at stake that has to do with whether or not our democracy can be manipulated by those who are already in power to entrench themselves further,” he articulated. “Or whether we’re going to have a system that allows the people to decide who’s going to represent them.”

Political Maneuvering in Context

Newsom, who is eyeing a potential presidential run in 2028, alongside other Democratic leaders, is calling on voters to temporarily halt the state’s independent redistricting commission to approve the proposed new electoral boundaries. This maneuver comes in response to the recent gerrymandering efforts by Texas Republicans, who, at the behest of former President Trump, reshaped their congressional map to solidify their power. Meanwhile, other states are also navigating the treacherous waters of redistricting.

National Implications

On the same day, North Carolina’s legislature ratified changes to its voting boundaries, seeking to add another Republican seat. Trump’s ongoing pressure on Republican-led states to pursue similar redistricting efforts reflects a broader strategy to maintain partisan dominance, even as Indiana leaders recently indicated they lack the votes to follow suit.

Exposing the Tactics

In his remarks, Obama did not shy away from criticizing Trump and the GOP’s intentions, asserting that they seek to “tinker around with [congressional districts] to see if they can give themselves an advantage” and shield themselves from voter discontent. “It’s brazen,” he remarked, pointing out that the Republicans are not masking their motives behind any pretense. “They’re simply doing it because they think they can.”

A Hope for Fairness

In the lead-up to the election, Obama is actively participating in “Yes on 50” broadcast ads that are being disseminated across California, a testament to the high stakes involved. He emphasized that Proposition 50 could provide Democrats with “a chance, at least, to create a level playing field in the upcoming midterm elections.”

The Power of Perception

After the call, Newsom highlighted the significance of these ads and his popularity within the Democratic base, stating, “We appreciate seeing you up on our screens every hour of every day as our closing messenger.” This recognition underscores the critical role of media perception in shaping public opinion and ultimately influencing the election’s outcome.
