McIver’s Defense: Political Motivations Behind the Charges
In the aftermath of these accusations, Rep. McIver issued a statement on Monday evening, contending that the charges are politically motivated. She contends that the situation escalated due to actions taken by ICE agents during what should have been a routine oversight visit.
“Earlier this month, I joined my colleagues to inspect the treatment of ICE detainees at Delaney Hall in my district. Our oversight responsibilities should have ensured a peaceful and brief visit. However, the arrest of Mayor Baraka by ICE agents led to an unnecessary confrontation. These charges mischaracterize my actions and aim to intimidate legislative oversight,” McIver asserted. “This administration will not deter me from advocating for my constituents and standing up for justice. I appreciate all the support I’ve received and look forward to presenting the truth in court.”
