Democratic lieutenant governors are ‘the most diverse’ group of politicians. Are they the party’s future?

Austin Davis, a prominent figure in Pennsylvania politics, is poised to take on a new role as the leader of the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA). With a focus on regaining lost ground for the party following recent defeats, Davis is aiming to strengthen the Democratic bench with a diverse group of elected officials.

The DLGA, while smaller compared to other party committees, plays a crucial role in supporting and promoting lieutenant governors across the country. As over two dozen lieutenant governors are set to be elected in the next two years, Davis sees an opportunity to build a strong foundation for the party.

In an interview, Davis hinted at the possibility of the DLGA getting involved in the upcoming primary contest in Virginia, a key state they are looking to flip. With the goal of ensuring the best candidates are put forward, the committee is open to intervening if needed to secure victories in the general election.

Virginia, where Republicans claimed top statewide offices three years ago, is a prime target for the DLGA. With four Democratic candidates vying for the lieutenant governor position currently held by a Republican, the race is heating up as the party aims to make significant gains.

Reflecting on recent successes in North Carolina and Delaware, where the DLGA made strategic investments that paid off, Davis is optimistic about the future. The committee’s diverse membership, which includes a majority of women and people of color, is seen as a strength that aligns with the direction the Democratic Party needs to take.

As Republicans attempt to use diversity as a divisive issue, Davis emphasizes the importance of showcasing a wide range of experiences within the party. By focusing on socio-economic issues and connecting with everyday Americans, Democrats can counter these attacks and resonate with voters.

The story of Austin Davis and the DLGA underscores the party’s commitment to inclusivity and representation. With a renewed focus on diversifying candidates and amplifying voices from all walks of life, Democrats are working towards a more inclusive and connected future for all Americans.
