On Friday, the Virginia Senate made a significant move by passing a resolution that will enable voters to decide on a new redistricting map during the 2026 midterm elections.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell articulated the necessity of this constitutional amendment, stating that external pressures forced Democrats into this position:

What you see before you is a constitutional amendment we never intended to introduce, but circumstances beyond our control have rendered it necessary.

We have put in considerable effort to establish an equitable bipartisan redistricting process, but we cannot pretend that we are operating in isolation.

The Democratic leadership emphasized that they are unwilling to disarm while Republicans are actively pursuing gerrymandering tactics to manipulate House seats across the nation.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries underscored the Democrats’ resolve to counteract these tactics:

Corrupt Republican sycophants in Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina have capitulated to Donald Trump, gerrymandering their congressional maps to rig the midterm elections.

We are resolutely pushing back against these schemes. Our successes with Prop 50 in California, a pivotal court victory in Utah, and our aggressive stance against extremists in Ohio illustrate this. Moreover, a bipartisan coalition has successfully thwarted Trump’s plans in Indiana and Kansas.
