Denver police have issued a shelter-in-place order near the University of Denver on Saturday night due to an “active barricaded subject off-campus,” according to the school’s campus safety department on X.

Residents in Denver received a wireless emergency alert on their cellphones, but city officials later admitted that it was mistakenly sent to a wider area than intended.

The alert was issued around 8 p.m. for “an active threat” near the area of 2495 S. Vine St., located south of DU’s campus. However, campus safety officials confirmed that there is no active threat to DU.

Denver police stated on X that they are currently attempting to make contact with an individual who is barricaded in a residence.

Individuals in the vicinity were advised to “stay away from windows and doors until further notice.” The Denver Public Safety Department announced on X that the shelter-in-place order applies only to a two-block radius around the South Vine Street address.

The emergency alert sent out at 8 p.m. urged people to monitor the Denver Police Department’s X account for updates. However, the agency did not post updates on the situation until 8:47 p.m.

This story is still developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
