Article Title: Woman Jailed for Catfishing Friend Out of Life Savings by Posing as Attractive Male

A woman has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for a despicable act of fraud where she catfished her female friend out of over $110,000 by pretending to be a “pretty boy” in love with her. Sumaiya Khurram, 33, deceived her victim by using fake images of an attractive male on WhatsApp, claiming he needed private treatment for blood cancer.

The deception lasted for 20 months, during which Khurram, from Bordesley Green, Birmingham, posed as a man named Etesham Khan and manipulated her friend, who had known her for 20 years. The victim, who had physical disabilities and was vulnerable, believed that Khan was someone she would meet and marry. Khurram took advantage of her friend’s strict Muslim faith and convinced her to hand over $113,300 under the guise of helping her fictitious lover with medical expenses.

The court heard that Khurram bombarded the victim with pictures and messages, including discussions of sexual matters, all done through WhatsApp. The victim, inexperienced in the ways of the world, fell victim to the elaborate scheme. The offense, which took place between 2015 and 2017, left the victim emotionally devastated and financially ruined.

Judge Peter Cooke described the case as one of the most despicable he had ever seen, highlighting the deliberate manipulation and exploitation of the victim’s vulnerabilities. The victim, in a statement, expressed feelings of betrayal and devastation, stating that the ordeal had taken a toll on her health and well-being.

Despite showing remorse, Khurram’s actions were deemed wicked and calculated. Her defense argued that the offense was not sophisticated and that she had not reoffended since. However, the judge emphasized the severity of the crime and the impact it had on the victim’s life.

In conclusion, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online deception and the devastating consequences it can have on unsuspecting individuals. Catfishing, especially when done with malicious intent, can have far-reaching effects on the lives of those targeted. It is essential to remain vigilant and cautious when engaging with others online to avoid falling victim to such deceitful schemes.
