Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world

Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, bringing an end to more than a week of escalating conflict between the two nations. The potential conflict had raised concerns about the United States being drawn into another Middle Eastern war. The US president took to Truth Social to declare the end of what he referred to as the “12 day war” and extended congratulations to both sides for reaching a resolution.

According to Trump’s statement, Israel and Iran had agreed to a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE, with the truce set to take effect within 24 hours. The announcement was met with silence from both Israel and Iran initially. The ceasefire was scheduled to commence once both countries had completed their ongoing missions.

Following Iran’s missile attack on the US’s Al Udeid air base near Doha, Trump expressed gratitude for Iran’s advance warning of the assault, which resulted in no American or Qatari casualties. The attack on the largest American air base in the Middle East was seen as largely symbolic, with oil prices falling as a result.

The Al Udeid base serves as the US Central Command’s regional headquarters and typically houses around 10,000 American troops. Most personnel had been evacuated as tensions escalated in the region, and Qatar had closed its airspace in anticipation of an Iranian attack. Fortunately, Qatar’s air defenses successfully intercepted the incoming missiles, preventing any damage to the base.

The ceasefire announcement came shortly after Trump ordered a military strike on Iran’s main nuclear sites, Fordow and Natanz. This action was taken in support of Israel’s 10-day war against Iran. The situation escalated when Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi of Iran’s armed forces condemned Trump’s violation of international norms by breaching Iranian airspace.

The recent events have caused concern among regional states, leading to the evacuation of foreign staff from oilfields in southern Iraq by companies like BP, TotalEnergies, and Eni. The fear of potential attacks on energy infrastructure and US bases has put the region on edge, with airlines rerouting flights and canceling destinations in the Gulf.

As tensions ease with the ceasefire agreement, the focus now shifts to rebuilding relationships and ensuring stability in the region. The impact of the recent hostilities on diplomatic efforts between Iran and its Arab neighbors remains to be seen. The situation underscores the delicate balance of power in the Middle East and the ongoing challenges of maintaining peace and security in the region.
