Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world

Donald Trump has hinted that his administration may be close to reaching a deal with Harvard University, signaling a potential end to his recent criticisms of the prestigious institution.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, the former US president announced, “We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so.”

Trump and other White House officials have been vocal in their demands for reforms at Harvard, accusing the university of not adequately addressing antisemitism and failing to cooperate with government requests for information on students suspected of illegal activities.

Harvard has vehemently denied these allegations, characterizing the administration’s actions as an attack on academic freedom and free speech. The university responded by filing a lawsuit against the government, prompting retaliatory measures from the White House, including the cancellation of government funding, threats to revoke tax-exempt status, and a ban on accepting international students.

The move to block international students, who contribute significantly to the diversity and academic excellence of US universities, has raised concerns within the higher education community. Harvard, with approximately 7,000 international students, has been at the forefront of the legal battle against the government’s actions.

A federal court recently ruled in favor of Harvard, allowing the university to continue hosting international students while the legal dispute unfolds. Despite the ongoing tensions, Harvard has taken steps to address the issues raised by the White House, including the removal of senior academics and initiatives to combat antisemitism on campus.

In his latest statement, Trump praised Harvard for its cooperation during negotiations and suggested that a potential settlement could have far-reaching implications for the country. He stated, “If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country.”

Harvard has yet to respond to Trump’s comments. The outcome of the negotiations between the university and the administration remains uncertain, but the potential resolution could have significant implications for higher education and government relations. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
