Political tensions intensified when Donald Trump named Ariel Abergel, previously a producer for Fox News, as the executive director of America250 in May 2025.
According to Reginald Browne, a businessman from New Jersey serving on the commission, Abergel’s approach seemed aimed at dismantling their initiatives.
Browne remarked, “He was influenced by whoever was guiding his actions. I don’t think it reached the top levels, but rather somewhere in the middle.”
Freedom 250 was established in October 2025, emerging as a parallel entity that attracted both taxpayer and donor funds.
Democrats in Congress alleged that donors planning to contribute to America250 were misled into sending funds to Freedom 250, claims that Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, dismissed as a “partisan smear” and “categorically false.”
Browne noted, “Many corporations were unsure which organization to support or whether it was approved by the president to donate to America250.”
He further stated that this uncertainty led to “missed opportunities.”
