Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his disapproval of the NFL’s new kickoff rule, calling it “ridiculous”. The rule in question was implemented at the start of the 2024-2025 season in an effort to address the historically low kickoff return rate and high injury rate on kickoffs in previous seasons.

The dynamic kickoff rule was designed to make kickoffs more closely resemble a scrimmage play, with players from both teams lining up closer together to reduce space and speed. This change was also intended to promote more kickoff returns and ultimately make the game safer for players.

Under the new rule, players on the kicking team must line up on the receiving team’s 40-yard line, rather than behind the kicker. They are also prohibited from moving until the ball hits the ground or a player in the landing zone or end zone. Kickers are not allowed to cross the 50-yard line until the ball touches the ground or a player in the designated zones.

Trump’s criticism of the rule change is not new, as he previously voiced his concerns during a conversation with Outkick.com’s Clay Travis at a college football game. While acknowledging the potential risks associated with the traditional kickoff format, Trump expressed his belief that the NFL’s decision to change the rule was a “terrible mistake” because it looked “strange”.

Despite his reservations about the new rule, Trump praised the intense match-up between the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia, both of which he won in the election. He described the game as “big-time football” and “great to see”.

In conclusion, Trump’s criticism of the NFL’s new kickoff rule highlights the ongoing debate surrounding player safety and the balance between tradition and innovation in football. While the rule change aims to reduce injuries and increase excitement in the game, not everyone is convinced that it is the right approach.
