The sentencing of Hanna Gilmour to 36 years in prison for the tragic death of her 22-month-old son, Layton, has been handed down by Douglas County Judge Ryan Stuart, as per a news release from the 23rd Judicial District.
Following a jury’s verdict finding Gilmour, 29, guilty of felony child abuse resulting in death and misdemeanor child abuse, Chief Deputy District Attorney Danielle Jaramillo stated, “Thirty-six years will never bring back a beautiful, innocent child, but that number shows Layton’s short life mattered, and this sentence reflects that.”
The tragic incident unfolded when Layton’s father, Jacob Birkbeck, arrived at Gilmour’s Littleton apartment for a custody exchange in November 2022. Upon seeing his son in distress, Gilmour reportedly dismissed it, claiming the child was sleeping.
Later, Birkbeck discovered Layton unconscious and unresponsive, prompting him to call 911. Tragically, the child did not survive. Subsequent investigations of Gilmour’s residence unveiled substances like cocaine, mushrooms, marijuana, and fentanyl.
Prosecutors alleged that Layton accidentally ingested fentanyl, leading to his untimely demise as he crawled on the floor. The heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drug abuse on innocent lives.
