Downtown Chicago Nightclub Permanently Closes Following Mass Shooting
The tragic events that unfolded at the downtown Chicago nightclub, Artis Lounge, earlier this month have led to the permanent closure of the establishment. The nightclub, located at 311 West Chicago Avenue, was the scene of a mass shooting that resulted in the death of four individuals and injuries to 14 others. Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) expressed relief at the decision to shut down the venue.
The shooting took place during a record release party for rapper Mello Buckzz on the night of July 2. Gunmen opened fire outside the venue as the event was ending, firing more than 20 shots in what could be considered one of the deadliest shootings in Chicago’s history.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Following the attack, Reilly criticized the venue’s operators for being dishonest with city officials about their intended use of the space. This incident marked the second mass shooting at the location, with the previous one occurring in 2022 under different ownership.
Chicago police promptly issued a summary closure order, effectively shutting down Artis Lounge. The management of the lounge has voluntarily withdrawn their pending liquor license application and made the decision to permanently cease operations at the location.
In an Instagram post, the owners of Artis Lounge described the venue as a safe space that was proudly Black-, Brown-, Queer-, and Women-owned. They attributed the closure to “coded policies and attempted public persecution” that made them feel unwelcome in the city.
Reilly, however, placed the blame on the lounge’s management, accusing them of allowing a private rap album release party with individuals tied to known gang affiliations. He emphasized that the operators failed to uphold their commitments, resulting in tragic consequences.
Video footage shared on social media showed individuals flashing gang signs before the shooting occurred. The police reported that gunmen fired from at least three different weapons, including possibly from a dark-colored 2022 Honda sedan that fled the scene.
Authorities identified the deceased individuals as Leon Andrew Henry, Aviance King, Taylor Walker, and Devonte Williamson. The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related, with Crime Stoppers offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the perpetrators.
Less than a week after the shooting, federal prosecutors charged Mello Buckzz’s father with illegal firearm sales. However, investigators do not believe this activity is connected to the nightclub shooting.
In light of these tragic events, the city of Chicago has taken steps to address the violence that plagues the community. The closure of Artis Lounge serves as a somber reminder of the need for greater safety and accountability in the city’s nightlife scene.
