Man Sentenced to Probation and Community Service for Fatal Lake Shore Drive Crash

Bradley Hamel, Jaida Rosado Colon, and Jalean Gibbs (Chicago Police Department, GoFundMe)

A tragic incident unfolded on October 30, 2023, when Bradley Hamel was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Bolt on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Traveling at a speed exceeding 60 mph, Hamel attempted to exit at 31st Street, causing a collision with a Nissan Altima. The impact led to a devastating crash that claimed the lives of 24-year-old Jaida Rosado Colon and 24-year-old Jalean Gibbs, with a third passenger sustaining critical injuries.

After a bench trial, Judge James Obbish found Hamel guilty of two counts of reckless homicide by motor vehicle and aggravated reckless driving. The court sentenced him to 30 months of probation and mandated 1,000 hours of community service as part of his punishment.

Witnesses recalled Gibbs as a compassionate individual who brightened every room he entered, while Rosado was described as a beacon of positivity, always looking out for others and continuously striving for personal growth and achievements.

The tragic incident left a lasting impact on the community, with friends and family members mourning the loss of two vibrant young individuals. The repercussions of reckless driving serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible behavior behind the wheel.

As the legal proceedings conclude, the memory of Jaida Rosado Colon and Jalean Gibbs lives on through the legacy of their kindness, compassion, and positive impact on those around them.
