El Salvador Becomes the Safest Country in Hispanic America to Walk at Night: Nayib Bukele’s Strategy Reduces Homicides and Strengthens Authority and Public Order – Gateway Hispanic

El Salvador has achieved a remarkable transformation in public safety, establishing itself as the safest nation in Hispanic America for solo nighttime strolls.

A striking 87% of Salvadorans report feeling secure walking alone in their neighborhoods at night, a significant leap compared to the regional average of 47%. This figure even eclipses that of countries typically regarded as safe, including Uruguay, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.

This transformation stems from the aggressive public security initiatives enacted under President Nayib Bukele’s leadership. Following the state of exception declared in March 2022, the government launched mass arrests of alleged gang affiliates and bolstered law enforcement with an unprecedented intelligence-driven and territorial control strategy.

Six years ago, Nayib Bukele assumed the presidency of El Salvador.

Among his first actions was to bar George Soros from entering the country and eliminate his influence.

Since then, El Salvador has emerged as one of the safest destinations globally.

The outcomes are nothing short of astonishing: the homicide rate plummeted from 1,147 in 2021 to 496 in 2022, representing a dramatic 56.8% decline in 2023. This included an impressive 279 days without murders recorded in 2024.

A country once stigmatized as the “murder capital” of Central America is now listed among the top ten worldwide in safety perception.

The surge in perceived safety has yielded positive repercussions for both the economy and tourism. In 2024, El Salvador welcomed close to four million visitors—a 17% increase from the previous year—demonstrating rising investor and tourist confidence in the nation’s stability.

Public trust in local law enforcement has improved, while incidents of theft and assault have substantially decreased, reinforcing institutions as reliable guardians of order and public security.

Nonetheless, various international human rights organizations have raised concerns regarding specific elements of these policies, questioning the legality of certain arrests and the conditions within detention facilities.

Regardless, the administration has prioritized the restoration of order and societal protection, illustrating that decisive policies are crucial for ensuring the safety and stability of the nation.

The experience of El Salvador stands as a testament that a combination of legitimate authority, effective territorial control, and adherence to the law can profoundly transform a violence-stricken environment into a safe haven for its citizens and tourists alike.

This scenario reaffirms that authority, order, and institutional integrity not only protect families but also serve as the foundation for any stable and prosperous society.

This success draws a stark contrast with leftist methodologies, which often embrace lenient and less effective frameworks, prioritizing theories of individual rights over societal order—a model that has repeatedly led to rising insecurity and social deterioration in various countries throughout the region.
