Elon Musk has recently revealed plans for a significant chip-manufacturing venture that will involve his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.
Bloomberg reports that Musk disclosed these plans during a Saturday evening event in downtown Austin, Texas. A photo accompanying the event suggests that the proposed “Terafab” facility will be constructed near Tesla’s headquarters and gigafactory in Austin.
Musk explained that the initiative is driven by the slow production pace of semiconductor manufacturers, which fails to meet the artificial intelligence and robotics demands of his companies. He stated, “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.”
The project aims to produce chips capable of supporting 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power annually on Earth, in addition to a terawatt in space. Musk did not provide a timeline for these objectives.
According to Bloomberg, while Musk lacks experience in semiconductor manufacturing, he is known for setting ambitious goals and timelines that are often challenging to achieve.Â
