Invercargill has often been unfairly criticized by those who have never experienced its charm firsthand. Despite its reputation for less-than-ideal weather, the city holds a special place in the hearts of many, especially with the recent passing of the beloved Sir Tim Shadbolt at the age of 78.

Sir Tim was a unique figure in New Zealand politics, known for his infectious smile and unwavering dedication to Invercargill. His journey from Auckland to the South Pole city was nothing short of remarkable, with multiple terms as mayor under his belt.

While Sir Tim faced challenges towards the end of his tenure, his impact on Invercargill and the wider Southland region cannot be understated. From supporting local businesses to championing educational initiatives, he left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Despite his struggles in his final term, Sir Tim’s contributions to the community will always be remembered. His passing, along with that of another former mayor, serves as a reminder of the highs and lows of public service.

In the end, Sir Tim’s legacy serves as a lesson for all mayors on the importance of knowing when to pass on the torch. His larger-than-life persona and dedication to Invercargill will forever be a part of the city’s history.
