Eric Dane, known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” was forced to withdraw from an awards gala on Saturday due to complications arising from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Dane was scheduled to receive the Advocate of the Year Award at the ALS Network’s Champions for Cures and Care gala. However, just hours before the event, it was announced that Dane would not be able to attend due to the physical limitations imposed by ALS.
An ALSN representative expressed gratitude for Dane’s bravery, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to the ALS community. Despite his absence, Grammy-nominated Broadway star Aaron Lazar accepted the award on Dane’s behalf. Dane, in a pre-recorded message, expressed his gratitude to the ALS Network for the honor bestowed upon him.
In the video message, Dane acknowledged the collective effort of his loved ones in facing ALS alongside him, as well as the courage demonstrated by all individuals battling the disease. He also recognized the tireless dedication of caregivers and advocates in the fight against ALS.
Dane publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis to People magazine in April 2025, expressing gratitude for being able to continue working and anticipating his return to the set of “Euphoria.” He requested privacy for himself and his family during this challenging time.
ALS is a progressive and ultimately fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerves in the body, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and difficulty with essential functions such as breathing, speaking, and movement. Currently, there is no known cure for ALS.
The struggle against ALS continues, with individuals like Eric Dane and organizations like the ALS Network working tirelessly to raise awareness, provide support, and advocate for research into finding a cure for this devastating disease.
