Whenever I announce to my students that we’re heading to the lab, it feels like I’m igniting a spark of joy in the classroom. For them, lab time symbolizes curiosity, thrill, and an opportunity for immersive, hands-on learning. One of our standout favorites is the flame test, where we drop metal salt solutions into a flame to witness vivid bursts of color erupting before our eyes—it’s akin to hosting our own indoor fireworks display!

Yet, as any seasoned educator will tell you, lab days can carry their own unique set of challenges. Introducing middle and high school students to potentially hazardous materials can be daunting, especially for new teachers stepping into the world of science education. Therefore, prior to any lab activity, I revisit essential safety protocols, such as securing long hair and prohibiting food and drinks, while also instructing students on the proper use of safety equipment.

With that in mind, I’d like to share the 10 essential lab safety items I depend on to keep my students safe while fostering a fun learning environment, along with an invaluable free download that every science teacher should provide to their students before they enter the lab.

1. Indirect-Vented Safety Goggles

Eye protection in the lab is paramount, especially when working with chemicals. I always opt for indirect-vented goggles over standard safety glasses to guarantee complete eye coverage. These specialized goggles are essential for safeguarding against chemical splashes.

Experiments involving flames carry a higher risk. I feel reassured knowing that alongside a fire extinguisher, we also have a fire blanket on hand that students can easily use in emergencies.

5. Hair Ties

When using Bunsen burners or alcohol lamps, it’s crucial for students to keep their hair tied back. I make sure to keep a stash of hair ties available for those who may forget to bring their own.

8. Lab Aprons

As many of the chemicals we use in the lab can stain or damage clothing, having disposable aprons readily available is a wise measure. Investing in rubber aprons is also a fantastic option for classrooms seeking durability.

9. Emergency Shower and Eyewash Station

In case of exposure to harmful chemicals, it’s vital for students to quickly remove substances to prevent injuries. An emergency shower combined with an eyewash station helps streamline the decontamination process for students during chemical spills. If your classroom or lab lacks built-in systems, Ward’s offers products that can be attached to standard faucets.
