A shocking case has emerged from Connecticut, where a woman named Kimberly Sullivan has been arrested for allegedly holding her stepson captive for a staggering 20 years. The 56-year-old woman faces charges of assault and kidnapping after her stepson, who is now 32 years old and remains unidentified, set fire to a small upstairs bedroom in their Waterbury home on February 17.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene to put out the fire, they made a horrifying discovery. They found an emaciated man weighing only 68 pounds, described by prosecutors as resembling a survivor of Auschwitz’s death camp. The victim, who intentionally started the fire as a desperate attempt to escape, revealed to rescue crews that he had been held captive since around the age of 11 in a tiny 8-foot-by-9-foot room without proper heating or air conditioning.
Following a detailed investigation, authorities now believe that the victim endured over two decades of abuse, starvation, neglect, and inhumane conditions. Shockingly, he was never provided with any medical or dental care during his captivity. While receiving treatment for smoke inhalation, the victim expressed his desire for freedom, stating, “I wanted my freedom.”
Sullivan, the alleged perpetrator, is currently in custody on a $300,000 bond following her arraignment. Her lawyer, Ioannis Kaloidis, has stated that she vehemently denies the accusations against her and plans to fight the charges vigorously. Chief Fernando Spagnolo expressed his dismay at the suffering endured by the victim, calling it both heartbreaking and unimaginable. He commended the investigative efforts of the officers and the Waterbury State’s Attorney’s Office for ensuring that justice is served in this horrific case.
According to Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Don Therkildsen, the victim’s ordeal is likened to something out of a horror movie. Prosecutors revealed during Sullivan’s arraignment that the victim deliberately set the fire, fully aware of the risks involved, as he had been trying to escape for two decades. The victim’s conditions reportedly worsened following his father’s death last year, with him being deprived of basic necessities like water and at times forced to drink from the toilet.
The tragedy of the situation is further highlighted by the fact that school officials had raised concerns about the victim’s well-being from a young age. His former elementary school principal, Tom Pannone, revealed that staff had noticed his thin appearance and his admission of not being allowed food at home. Despite multiple reports to the Department of Children and Families, the boy continued to suffer in silence. Pannone recalled how teachers would bring him food after seeing him scavenging for scraps, and even after he stopped attending school, the true extent of his suffering remained hidden.
The case of Kimberly Sullivan and her stepson is a harrowing reminder of the importance of vigilance and intervention in cases of suspected abuse and neglect. It serves as a wake-up call to communities and authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the most vulnerable among us.
