Former Police Officer Found Guilty of Violating Civil Rights of Teenage Girl

After 13 hours of deliberations, jurors convicted 30-year-old Dylan Miller of violating the civil rights of a teenage girl who accused him of sexual assault while on duty in August 2023.

Judge Nina Wang announced the verdict in U.S. District Court in Denver at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The jury deliberated all day Monday and for six and a half hours on Tuesday before finding Miller guilty of deprivation of civil rights, a class four felony, as per the indictment.

The victim, known as Olivia during the trial to protect her identity, recounted how Miller approached her and a friend in North Lake Park after midnight, asking her friend to leave. He then led Olivia to a secluded area where he forced her to perform oral sex on him, according to the arrest affidavit from Larimer County.

Following the verdict, Miller shared an emotional moment with friends and family in the courtroom before being taken into federal custody. His sentencing hearing was not scheduled during the court session to allow attorneys time to coordinate. Miller faces a potential life sentence.

Defense attorney Reid Elkus mentioned plans to file a motion for acquittal within the next 14 days, with a request for a 30-day extension. In addition to the federal conviction, Miller is also facing state charges in 8th Judicial District Court in Fort Collins for various felonies and misdemeanors related to the incident. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in this case.

Miller is scheduled to appear in court in Fort Collins on December 8 at 11 a.m.
