Former NFL player Devin Aguilar’s failed attempt to rob $1.2 million in marijuana profits in Colorado has recently come to light. The botched heist took place in December 2021 and ended with Aguilar abandoning the stolen cash in the woods due to its weight.

Aguilar, a former wide receiver for the University of Washington Huskies and briefly with the Tennessee Titans, left behind a crucial piece of evidence – his gloves. Authorities were able to extract his DNA from the gloves and link him to the crime. This led to Aguilar being sentenced to a year in Arapahoe County Jail, from which he was recently released.

The robbery was described as being meticulously planned, with Aguilar dressed in all black and armed with a pistol. His girlfriend at the time, Fawn Huya, who worked as a teller at the cash transport service targeted in the heist, was also implicated in the crime. She claimed to be unaware of Aguilar’s intentions but was found to have plans and sketches on her phone detailing the robbery.

During the robbery, Aguilar confronted the transport van driver and forced her to fill trash bags with over a million dollars in cash from marijuana businesses. However, Aguilar underestimated the weight of the money and was unable to carry it all, leaving the bags under a tree several football fields away.

Despite his partner-in-crime turning on him, Aguilar only served less than seven months behind bars after pleading guilty to felony theft and aggravated robbery. Prosecutors had initially sought a 15 to 20-year sentence, but the judge handed down a lighter punishment.

The victims of the crime, including the transport business and the driver, expressed disappointment with the lenient sentence. The driver has since been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks as a result of the traumatic experience.

Aguilar expressed remorse during his court appearance, stating that he takes full accountability for his actions and hopes for a second chance. However, the impact of his failed robbery attempt continues to affect those involved, highlighting the lasting consequences of such crimes.
