Former New York Jets player Darron Lee has found himself in hot water after allegedly consulting ChatGPT about how to cover up the murder of his girlfriend, Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo. The shocking details emerged during a preliminary hearing for the former linebacker, where prosecutors revealed the disturbing messages exchanged between Lee and the chat bot.
In the messages, Lee appeared to be seeking advice on how to handle the situation after allegedly beating and stabbing Perpétuo to death. He described finding her with swollen eyes and unresponsive, claiming that she had inflicted the injuries on herself. ChatGPT responded by providing guidance on how to handle the situation without attracting police attention.
The former Jets player also inquired about whether puncture wounds could be caused by a slip-and-fall, to which ChatGPT offered information on the likelihood of such injuries under specific conditions. District Attorney Coty Wamp stated that Lee used ChatGPT as a “legal advisor” during the two-day period leading up to Perpétuo’s death.
Prosecutors presented new police body camera footage showing Lee acting confused as he recounted finding Perpétuo dead in their home in Ooltewah, Tennessee. Despite Lee’s claims that Perpétuo suffered from narcolepsy and had fallen in the shower, evidence at the scene suggested a violent struggle had taken place.
Perpétuo was found with severe injuries, including brain trauma, a broken neck, bruising all over her body, and stab wounds. The medical examiner determined her cause of death as blunt force trauma. Detective Brian Lockhart described a gruesome scene inside the home, with blood splattered throughout and signs of a violent altercation.
Lee, 31, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors have indicated their intention to seek the death penalty if he is convicted. The case has sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about the use of AI technology in criminal investigations.
