Former Police Chief’s Daring Escape: A Case of Irony in Law Enforcement

In an astonishing turn of events, Grant Hardin, the former police chief of Gateway, Arkansas, successfully orchestrated an escape from prison on Saturday, where he was serving a total of 80 years for heinous crimes, including rape and first-degree murder. Authorities report that Hardin donned a makeshift police uniform, cleverly maneuvering supplies through the prison yard to deceive guards.

Excerpt from the New York Post:

A disgraced ex-police chief from Arkansas, currently serving 80 years for both rape and a cold-blooded execution, made a brazen escape from a high-security prison, cleverly disguised as a law enforcement officer.

Grant Hardin, age 56, was captured on surveillance footage walking out of the North Central Unit in Calico Rock, dressed in what seemed to be a homemade police uniform on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, Hardin, regarded as highly dangerous, managed to pass through a controlled gate while pushing a cart filled with utility materials—essentially playing a game of “trust me, I’m a cop.”

…In 2017, Hardin pled guilty to the murder of James Appleton, a 59-year-old water department employee who met a tragic fate, shot in the head at point-blank range while conversing with his brother-in-law, the town’s mayor.

…While serving his time, Hardin’s DNA was tested and linked to a 1997 rape case involving an elementary school teacher who was attacked at gunpoint in a school bathroom during a community church service held nearby.

In 2018, he pled guilty to rape and kidnapping, resulting in an additional 50-year sentence.

In a statement released by the Arkansas Department of Corrections, they noted, “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – CALICO ROCK – On Sunday, May 25, at approximately 3:40 p.m., inmate Grant Hardin, ADC #168541, escaped from the North Central Unit. Anyone with information about Hardin’s whereabouts is urged to contact local law enforcement immediately.”
