Mail Theft Plagues Greenwich Village During Holiday Season

Residents of Greenwich Village are on high alert as scooter-riding thieves continue to target a mailbox at University Place and East Ninth Street, stealing letters and checks. The brazen thieves have been caught on surveillance footage on four separate occasions, sparking outrage and concern among locals.

The recent wave of mailbox thefts has left residents feeling violated and frustrated. One victim, a former tech staffer, discovered that a $150 check he had sent through the mailbox was fraudulently deposited for 13 times the original amount. The thefts have also resulted in fraudulent checks being cashed in the area, causing financial losses for innocent victims.

Jay Miranda, a building resident manager near the mailbox, reported that tenants in his building had checks fraudulently altered after being sent through the mailbox. The thieves, captured on video, follow a consistent pattern of riding up on scooters or mopeds in the early morning hours to rummage through the mailbox. Despite efforts to report the thefts to the US Postal Service and NYPD, little action has been taken to address the issue.

Local workers, such as Isha Matko, have also fallen victim to mailbox theft in the past. Matko recalled how her rent checks were stolen from the same mailbox years ago, leading to financial losses and frustration. The repeated incidents have prompted some residents, like Todd Benedetto, to avoid using the mailbox altogether, opting to visit the post office instead.

The ongoing mailbox thefts have raised concerns about the safety and security of using postal services in the area. Residents are calling for increased vigilance and enforcement measures to combat the thieves who continue to target the mailbox. As the holiday season approaches, the need to protect precious mail, including gift cards and money sent to loved ones, becomes even more urgent.

Despite efforts to address the issue, representatives from the US Postal Service have yet to comment on the situation. With the community on edge and residents demanding action, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to the ongoing mailbox thefts plaguing Greenwich Village.
