The tragic passing of Eric Dane, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloane on the popular medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” has left the cast and fans mourning his loss. Dane, who appeared in 145 episodes of the show, passed away on February 19 after a battle with ALS.

Kim Raver, who played Dr. Teddy Altman on the series, took to Instagram to pay tribute to Dane, describing him as a light whose presence effortlessly shone on and off the set. She reminisced about his comedic timing and the twinkle in his eye that would light up the screen. Raver expressed her love and thoughts for Dane’s wife, Rebecca, and their daughters, sending them her heartfelt condolences.

Executive producer Krista Vernoff shared a touching moment from Dane’s return to the show in 2021 for a cameo appearance. She posted screenshots of a text conversation with Dane, where he eagerly agreed to come back to bring joy to the viewers. Vernoff fondly remembered Dane for his warm hugs, describing them as the best she had ever received. She expressed her sorrow at his passing and wished him peace.

Dane, affectionately known as “McSteamy” by fans, joined “Grey’s Anatomy” as a guest star in Season 2 and quickly became a beloved character. He returned as a series regular in Season 3 and made his final appearance in Season 9, where his character tragically died after a plane crash. Creator Shonda Rhimes has always praised Dane’s portrayal of Mark Sloane, considering him one of her favorite characters to write for. Dane made a special appearance in a 2021 episode as part of Meredith’s dream sequence.

In a statement, ABC and 20th Television expressed their deep sadness at the loss of Eric Dane, highlighting his remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on the show. They praised his courage and grace during his battle with ALS, which inspired many. The network extended their condolences to Dane’s family, friends, colleagues, and fans who were touched by his work.

In April 2025, just 11 months before his passing, Dane revealed his diagnosis with ALS. His co-star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey on the show, shared a touching moment from the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala, where she reached out to Dane immediately after learning of his diagnosis. Pompeo recalled their emotional conversation and the support she offered him during his difficult journey.

The legacy of Eric Dane and his iconic portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloane will forever remain in the hearts of “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. His talent, warmth, and unforgettable presence on the show will be dearly missed, but his impact will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many.
