The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across 31 states. However, the total number of cases under investigation exceeds 4,000.
Cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, is typically contracted through consuming contaminated food or water, often during international travel. Despite this, the recent increase in cases seems to originate domestically, mostly affecting individuals who have not traveled outside the United States.
The CDC recommends that anyone experiencing symptoms of cyclosporiasis, such as watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss, should consult a healthcare provider.
Although not usually life-threatening, cyclosporiasis can be extremely uncomfortable. Severe diarrhea episodes may persist for weeks, and some individuals might experience recurring symptoms.
Currently, at least 86 individuals have been hospitalized due to the infection.
