Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has recently unveiled new tools to combat impersonation and enhance content protection on its platform. This move comes in response to widespread complaints that Facebook has become overrun with AI-generated content, leading to a decline in original creator content and overall user experience.

Last year, Meta initiated a crackdown on spammy and unoriginal content, aiming to promote original creator content and minimize the prevalence of AI-generated slop on its feeds. By elevating original voices and discouraging low-quality posts, Meta hoped to restore its reputation as a creator-friendly platform.

The company’s efforts seem to have paid off, with views and engagement with original content on Facebook doubling in the second half of 2025 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Meta reported a significant decrease in the number of impersonators on the platform, with 20 million accounts removed in total last year and a 33% drop in impersonation reports targeting large creators.

To further enhance content protection, Meta is currently testing improvements to its tools that allow creators to flag their content when detected on Facebook’s platforms after being published by impersonators. These enhancements will streamline the reporting process and provide creators with a centralized dashboard to manage their content protection efforts more effectively.

Despite these advancements, Meta acknowledges the need to address unauthorized use of a creator’s likeness, which is currently not the focus of its content protection tools. The company is committed to refining its tools to better detect and prevent such infringements in the future.

Meta’s initiative to update Facebook’s content guidelines aims to clarify what constitutes original content on the platform. Content that is directly filmed or produced by a creator, as well as reels that remix existing content or provide new insights through overlays, will be prioritized. On the other hand, content that involves minor edits or duplicates a creator’s work will be considered unoriginal and deprioritized, discouraging re-uploads and low-value modifications.

In light of Meta’s efforts to combat the proliferation of AI-generated content and impersonation on its platform, the company is taking proactive steps to safeguard the integrity of its creator community and enhance the overall user experience on Facebook. As other tech giants like YouTube also grapple with the challenges posed by AI technology, Meta’s commitment to promoting original creator content and protecting users from impersonation marks a significant step towards a more authentic and engaging online environment.
