A New Approach to Addressing Homelessness in Skid Row, Los Angeles

A new initiative, A New Era America, is making strides in addressing the homelessness crisis in Skid Row, downtown Los Angeles. Founded by Samir Zakir, the group focuses on mental health first, aiming to stabilize individuals before rapid housing placements.

Skid Row is home to approximately 4,400 homeless individuals, with many living unsheltered in tents or makeshift structures. A New Era America emphasizes healing minds and restoring humanity, recognizing the impact of trauma and mental illness on those experiencing homelessness.

Despite significant public spending on homelessness programs in Los Angeles, thousands still remain on the streets. A New Era America’s approach involves “Kindness Pop-Ups,” connecting individuals to essential resources and enrolling them in a 90-day program that includes temporary housing, mental health counseling, and trauma-focused care.

While the numbers served by A New Era America are small compared to the overall homeless population, the organization sees their success stories as proof of concept. By focusing on outcomes rather than grant requirements, they aim to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those experiencing homelessness.

The initiative’s launch in Los Angeles involves volunteers walking through Skid Row, providing supplies, and enrolling participants on the spot. This hands-on approach reflects A New Era America’s commitment to taking action and making a difference in the community.
