In a shocking case that has drawn national attention, a man in South Carolina is facing severe charges for allegedly keeping four individuals captive in the basement of his residence. The situation unfolded dramatically when one of the captives succumbed to the physical abuse inflicted upon her.

The individual at the center of this horrifying incident, identified as Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr., aged 35, reportedly imprisoned a vulnerable married couple alongside two women he was romantically involved with in his Lancaster home. According to a warrant obtained by the Courier Post, Birchfield subjected them to sustained abuse while isolating them from the outside world, even regulating their meals and bathroom breaks.

The investigation began after one of the victims, the married woman, was found dead on July 25. Authorities reported that she had been deceased for approximately a day and had suffered both physical abuse and neglect, lacking food and necessary medical care.

Further inquiry led to the discovery of the deceased woman’s husband along with the other two women, who were also found under Birchfield’s control. Their identities have not been publicly disclosed.

Birchfield was arrested on August 1, facing multiple charges including abuse of a vulnerable adult, four counts of false imprisonment, and domestic violence. Subsequent to his initial charges, he was additionally accused of fraud and financial exploitation for allegedly misusing his victims’ funds.

As reported by WSOC-TV, authorities are awaiting the conclusion of a pathologist’s examination to determine if further charges are warranted against Birchfield.

“That’s a sick individual right there,” remarked neighbor Darryl Evans. “He’s a sick person to do something like that.”

The victims in this case, a vulnerable married couple, were under Birchfield’s care. It remains unclear how they came to know him. Furthermore, one of the two women in relationships with Birchfield had reportedly cohabited with him since September 2024, while the other had been living with him since 2015. The duration of the married couple’s stay at the residence is still unknown.

Arrest warrants indicate that the victims were permitted to leave the basement only with Birchfield’s consent. Alongside the physical torment, Birchfield is alleged to have stolen tens of thousands of dollars from them, including around $2,000 spent at Walmart using the couple’s credit card since 2021. In just the last eight months, Birchfield reportedly drained nearly $12,000 from their joint bank account to settle his credit card bills.

One of Birchfield’s girlfriends claimed he had threatened to kill her and harm her family, as outlined in the charging documents. Disturbingly, he also stated that he knew how to dispose of a body, referencing past experiences.

Birchfield is currently incarcerated at the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, held under a bond of $150,000.
