The decision to upgrade the Theatre Royal building has been met with enthusiasm by supporters, with work expected to commence next year.

After extensive deliberation and public consultations, the Timaru District Council (TDC) recently approved the upgrade of the Stafford St theatre building. The initial plans for a heritage hub were abandoned earlier this year, but a new museum building is in the works for the land behind the theatre.

Among the four options presented to the councillors, option 1B was chosen in a six to three vote. This option includes renovating the Theatre Royal building to make it suitable for its intended use while preserving its heritage status. Additionally, a new laneway connecting Barnard St and Stafford St will be developed, aiding in the future construction of the museum.

Save Timaru’s Arts and Rebuild our Theatre (Start) co-founder Jess Young expressed delight at the decision, emphasizing the importance of moving forward with option 1B. The South Canterbury Drama League president, Kevin Foley, also voiced his support for the development, highlighting the benefits it will bring to the community.

While the decision was welcomed by many, South Canterbury Museum Development Trust chairman John Simpson expressed some reservations about the unknown aspects of the project. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the museum’s inclusion in the plans.

The council has given the chief executive the authority to proceed with phase 1 of the Theatre Royal’s development, with a budget of up to $24 million. The construction of the new museum in phase 2 is yet to be scheduled, with hopes of work commencing in 2025.
