Fans of the beloved sci-fi series “Firefly” have reason to rejoice as it has been confirmed that the show will be making a return, albeit in animated form. Star Nathan Fillion, who has been hinting at a revival of the cult hit series for some time now, will be lending his voice to the animated show.
The news was first reported by Deadline, revealing that Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters will be serving as showrunners for the animated series. The show will be set between the original TV series, which aired in 2002, and the 2005 feature film “Serenity.” Animation studio ShadowMachine will be handling the visuals, with Fillion’s Collision33 teaming up with 20th Television Animation for the development.
Fillion was set to announce the news at the AwesomeCon event in Washington, D.C., and also discuss it on the “Once We Were Spacemen” podcast, which he co-hosts with fellow “Firefly” alum Alan Tudyk (Hoban “Wash” Washburne).
Last week, Fillion teased fans with cryptic social media videos featuring his former co-stars Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, and Adam Baldwin, hinting that something exciting was in the works.
“Firefly” is set in a future where a global civil war has led to a new system of planets and moons, following the crew of the spaceship Serenity as they navigate the challenges of life in the year 2517. Despite its short run of only 11 episodes, the show quickly gained a dedicated fan base and became a cult favorite after its premiere in 2002.
Initially cancelled by Fox due to low ratings, “Firefly” was praised for its unique blend of Western and sci-fi elements. In a review, Variety described the show as “cheeky and charming,” noting that creator Joss Whedon’s attempt to combine elements of Westerns and “Star Trek” was a refreshing change from other shows on television.
With the return of “Firefly” in animated form, fans can look forward to reuniting with their favorite characters and exploring new adventures in the ‘Verse. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting revival of a beloved series.
