First-ever flexible tool use seen in a cow suggests livestock are smarter than believed
The researchers plan to investigate how widespread tool use is in cattle and whether it could be harnessed to improve animal welfare. In a recent study, Auersperg and her colleagues found that captive imperial crows could learn to use tools by watching other crows. “We want to see whether cows can also learn from each other,” Osuna-Mascaró says. “It would be interesting to see if a cow that has never used a tool can learn to do so by observing a skilled individual. If so, this could be used to improve the welfare of livestock animals.”
The researchers are also eager to learn more about how Veronika’s tool use has influenced her life. “We will have to see what happens if we take away the broom,” Osuna-Mascaró says. “Will she try to use another object in the same way? Will she try to scratch herself in a different way? We are also interested in seeing what happens if we give her a tool that is more difficult to handle. How will she adapt?”
In the meantime, the team is enjoying their time with Veronika. “She is the perfect research subject,” Osuna-Mascaró says. “She is living her best life.” And it turns out that cows can have their own version of a happy ending.

Osuna Mascaró, a renowned primatologist, recently expressed her admiration for a groundbreaking study that showcased the tool-using abilities of cattle. The research, led by Veronika, demonstrated the impressive precision and adaptability of cows in manipulating tools to target specific areas. This discovery sheds light on the intelligence and capabilities of these animals, highlighting the need for enrichment activities to enhance their welfare.
Jill Pruetz, a primatologist from Texas State University, commended the authors of the study and emphasized the importance of providing enrichment for the well-being of cattle. Having two companion cows of her own, Claire and Edith, Pruetz shared her firsthand experience of witnessing the intelligence of bovines. She noted that the findings of the study underscore the significance of observing and understanding the behavior of cattle to ensure they have a fulfilling life.
Osuna Mascaró highlighted the significance of this research in uncovering the hidden talents of cows, a species that has coexisted with humans for thousands of years. She emphasized the need to give cattle the opportunity to play, interact with objects, and explore their capabilities independently. By acknowledging and appreciating the intelligence of these animals, we can provide them with the life they deserve.
In conclusion, the study on the tool-using abilities of cattle serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and understanding the cognitive abilities of all species. By observing and studying animals like cows, we can gain valuable insights into their behaviors and needs, ultimately promoting their well-being and ensuring a harmonious coexistence with humans. The Importance of Mental Health in Today’s Society
In today’s fast-paced and stressful society, mental health has become an increasingly important topic of discussion. With the rise of social media, constant connectivity, and high levels of competition in various aspects of life, many individuals are struggling to cope with the pressures and demands of modern life. This has led to a growing awareness of the importance of mental health and the need for more support and resources to address mental health issues.
One of the key reasons why mental health is so important in today’s society is because it affects every aspect of our lives. Our mental health influences how we think, feel, and behave, and can have a significant impact on our overall well-being and quality of life. Poor mental health can lead to a range of negative consequences, including increased stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. It can also affect our relationships, work performance, and physical health.
Another reason why mental health is crucial in today’s society is because of the stigma and discrimination that still exists around mental illness. Despite efforts to raise awareness and reduce stigma, many individuals still feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek help for their mental health issues. This can prevent people from getting the support they need and can lead to a worsening of their symptoms and overall well-being.
Furthermore, mental health issues are becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society. According to the World Health Organization, depression is now the leading cause of disability worldwide, and anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions. This highlights the need for greater awareness, resources, and support for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
In recent years, there has been a greater focus on promoting mental health and well-being in society. This includes efforts to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and increase access to mental health services. Many organizations, schools, workplaces, and communities are implementing programs and initiatives to support mental health and provide resources for individuals in need.
It is essential for individuals to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. This can involve talking to a therapist, counselor, or mental health professional, practicing self-care and stress management techniques, and reaching out to friends and family for support. It is also important for society as a whole to continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and advocate for greater access to mental health services.
In conclusion, mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being and quality of life. In today’s fast-paced and stressful society, it is more important than ever to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed. By raising awareness, reducing stigma, and increasing access to mental health services, we can create a more supportive and inclusive society for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
