“The essence of human nature lies in the meticulous attention to detail. Every nuance matters,” declared First Lady Melania Trump. She further emphasized, “This underscores why America’s fashion industry stands at the forefront globally.”

Today, the First Lady marked a significant milestone by donating her 2025 inaugural gown to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s First Ladies Collection—a privilege shared by only a select few in the annals of history.

“Every stitch captures the human experience—the relentless pursuit of excellence and the ambition to transcend mediocrity, reflecting America’s destiny,” added Melania Trump.

The gown, designed by Hervé Pierre, features a strapless off-white silk crepe silhouette trimmed in black silk gazar, complemented by a reproduction of a diamond brooch from 1955 by Harry Winston, elegantly displayed on a black ribbon choker. Mrs. Trump hailed the gown as a celebration of the originality, creativity, and superior craftsmanship inherent in American fashion.

“Creating such a complex piece is no small task. Behind every couture masterpiece lies a dedicated team of patternmakers, seamstresses, and artisans who breathe life into creative visions,” Mrs. Trump noted.

The presentation ceremony featured speeches from Smithsonian Secretary Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III, Museum Director Anthea M. Hartig, and Mrs. Trump herself. Established in 1912, the First Ladies Collection remains one of the Smithsonian’s most visited exhibitions, showcasing over a century’s worth of inaugural attire alongside personal artifacts and White House memorabilia.

Notably, Melania Trump becomes the first non-consecutive First Lady to donate an inaugural gown a second time, joining the ranks of only one other First Lady in history—Ida McKinley, who made similar contributions in 1897 and 1901.

Visitors can view Mrs. Trump’s gown in the First Ladies exhibition at the National Museum of American History starting today. The museum welcomes guests daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with free admission.

Full Remarks by First Lady Melania Trump (As Prepared for Delivery)

Good morning, Secretary Bunch. Thank you for the invitation to join you at the Smithsonian today. This museum is a cultural treasure, and it is my privilege to celebrate this momentous occasion in the company of so many esteemed individuals.

Human nature resides in the discipline of detail. Everything is in the detail.

This is not merely a dress.

This represents over 50 years of accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom woven into every thread and stitch. The precisely crafted black “Z” shape on the bodice evokes decades of memories, experiences, and influences, all embedded within its robust seams—forever preserved.

Mr. Hervé Pierre’s expertise in couture design has established him as a bold, independent visionary. The diamond brooch, designed by Harry Winston in 1955, was graciously loaned to me for this occasion. Its understated black neckpiece elegantly frames the dazzling floral diamond cluster, achieving a harmonious balance with my overall ensemble.

The striking interplay of black and white evokes a deep emotional resonance. American creativity manifests in myriad forms across various platforms, often providing a clear vision. This gown articulates a distinct perspective—a modern silhouette that is both bold and dignified, exuding an unwavering chicness.

Constructing such a sophisticated garment is no simple endeavor. Behind every true couture creation stands a committed team of patternmakers, seamstresses, and artisans who transform a vision into tangible reality. I take immense pride in collaborating with each of these talented individuals.

The essence of the human experience is encapsulated in every stitch—the aspiration to overcome mediocrity and strive for greatness, reflecting America’s destiny. This black-and-white masterpiece epitomizes America’s spirit of originality, exceptional craftsmanship, and limitless creativity. It serves as a reminder of why America’s fashion industry can lead the world.

Personally, I cherish the creative process, from inception to completion. It is a gradual journey, but the outcome is invariably enchanting. For those who have seen my recent film, MELANIA, you understand the dedication required to bring this technical marvel to fruition.

We must take pride not only in our daily acts of self-care but also in the boldness of self-expression—how we present ourselves to the world. The art of self-presentation can be honed over a lifetime, yet even a young girl who nurtures herself from within, stepping out for school with poise and confidence, claims her rightful place in the world. This spark of self-assurance has lasting impacts.

I am honored to have our creative vision showcased here once again, within the esteemed walls of this institution, for all time.
